While there is not much you can do to stop time in its tracks, there are several things we can avoid in order to minimise the effects of aging and slow down the process. In this article we will discuss some of the most common mistakes and how to avoid them.

1. Don't underestimate the importance of good skin care

Yes, we all do the cleansing, toning and moisturizing thing, but are we always sure we're using the right products? When it comes to skin care products, it is advisable to buy the best quality you can afford. Invest in a range that consists of a:

  • Daily regenerating facial foam cleanser

  • Alcohol free toner

  • Day cream with SPF 15

  • Overnight repair cream

  • Concentrated resurfacing serum
2. Make sure you don't neglect your hands, chest and neck

It's true that our hands, chest and neck show the first signs of aging. This is because the skin on these parts of our bodies is much more delicate and doesn't contain as many oil glands as other parts, which can lead to dryness and premature aging. Make sure you take care of those delicate areas the same way you take care of your facial skin.

3. Avoid rubbing your eyes

As much as rubbing your eyes is a wonderful feeling, especially when they feel tired, doing this too often can cause the delicate skin to stretch as the area around the eyes is the least elastic and the most sensitive. Avoid using rich creams around your eyes and rather opt for a gel-based product to keep your skin hydrated and firm.

4. Don't skip your sunscreen, even in winter

Out of all the anti- aging tools, sunscreen is probably the most important. The UV rays of the sun are present throughout the year, even on cloudy days and in winter, and they can cause major skin damage, leading to premature aging; loss of elasticity, wrinkles and age spots. Avoid sun-damaged skin by incorporating a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 into your skin care regime.

5. Don't underestimate the importance of (how you) sleep

Not only is it important to get enough sleep, when it comes to aging skin, the way you sleep is just as important. A consistent sleeping cycle is critical as it ensures that you go through all the important stages of sleep. REM sleep is especially important as this is the phase in which our bodies and our skins receive the most healing.

When it comes to slowing down the aging process, we need to look at more than just skin care products. It's about treating our skin with the utmost care, never leaving the house without sunscreen, being gentle with the delicate skin around our eyes and getting regular sleep.
